NEUROUROLOGY
Neurourology is the urology subspecialty concerned with functional impairment of the genitourinary system due to neurological conditions such as strokes, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and spinal injuries.
The above conditions cause impairment to the innervation of the genitourinary system, resulting in the manifestation of conditions such as:
- Urinary incontinence
- Overactive bladder
- Urinary retention
- Detrusor-sphincter dyssynergia
Urodynamic testing has a significant diagnostic role in the conditions with which neuro-urology is concerned.
For the treatment of the above conditions after taking into account clinical examination results, laboratory tests and urodynamic testing, the following may be required:
- Intermittent self-catheterization of the bladder
- Anticholinergic medication
- Botulinum toxin injections in the detrusor muscle of the bladder
- Sacral neuromodulation
The abovementioned therapeutic procedures are mainly aimed at safeguarding renal function and secondarily on quality of life enhancement so as to make living with the disease tolerable.
